Always By My Side

A portable mirror,
Shining at me in need of use.
Looking at me wondering when I'll talk to my friends again,
Or my parents, or anyone else.

A personal post office,
Sending and receiving letters, and modernized telegrams,
Without the cost of a stamp,
But with the speed of light.

An alarm clock, a radio,
A music player with an ever-expanding network of songs,
A calendar, a notepad, a stopwatch, a calculator
All at the ends of my fingertips.

I know your sound better than my own voice,
Responding to it every time as if it were a fire.

I can't have a conversation with you,
But because of you, I can talk with others.
If we tried to talk,
My questions would have no response,
Words floating into oblivion.
In the depths of my denim pocket,
You sit there, quiet, still, and motionless
Until you need my attention,
At which point you play your unique sound:
Ring.
Ring.
