Memories/Dream

It was my
First New Year
Away from home,
Gone was the snow that
Blanketed the earth and brightened the day.
Gone were the icicles that
Hung from the eves of houses and glistened in the sun.
Gone was the holiday cheer that
Lingered from Christmas and shined in the eyes of all the kids.
But the seasons had remained unchanged; winter was as unforgiving as ever.
Rising every morning, only to set and darken the sky too early,
Was the same lazy winter sun.
Stinging my cheeks every time it whipped by,
Was the same harsh winter wind.
Stabbing my lungs every time I inhaled,
Was the same chilly winter air.
It was like a pleasant dream,
That disappeared as soon
As it ended.
