New York Summertime

Another Brooklyn Summer, 1952

All I can hear is the heat

Scorched mothers calm wailing babies

Daytime T.V. has taken over the apartment

I think I’m gonna go crazy

Mama had to go to work again

Nobody is home, but me

And the dreadful, overpowering, 110 degrees

Even the icebox is begging for mercy

I think I’m gonna go crazy

The fan breaks, and

Nothing seems more refreshing than a hot, steaming

Glass of Mama’s Own Homemade Lemonade, so icy fresh just yesterday

I collapse on the broken sofa, stuck in the inferno I call home

I think I’m gonna go crazy
