Mountainous Stairwell

Two freckled girls, peering up, eyes glowing with determination,
Ready to conquer the mountain that is the stairwell,
The rug’s patterned teeth threaten burn on contact
Anticipation heightens, as smiles grow triple in size,
Each step would be a battle with gravity,
But we were ready.

A lonely lightbulb gives rise to monstrous shadows,
Guarding the mysteries lurking in forgotten corners.
One two three...thunderous breaths fill the silence,
Halfway there, guilty giggles saturate the air,
At the top finally. . .oh no!
They hid the presents somewhere else.
